Bosnia, Serb authorities declare General Mladic is in the country

(14/2/2002)BELGRADE (February 14) - The Serbian authorities have indicated that the former Bosnian Serb army commander, Ratko Mladic, who is wanted on war crimes charges, is in the country, reported BBC. A high-ranking minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, said officials had in vain tried to persuade General Mladic to surrender voluntarily to the Hague tribunal. The minister said the general had also been informed that he no longer was under the protection of the Yugoslav army. Correspondents say the comments suggest that the authorities may be preparing the ground for General Mladic being handed over. Prosecutors from the war crimes tribunal earlier said they believed General Mladic was currently in Belgrade.
