Yugoslavia: Arrest of Karadzic and Mladic, Kostunica: No declaration

(18/1/2002)BELGRADE (January 18) - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has denied telling a Kosovo news agency that KFOR troops had arrested wartime Bosnian Serb leaders Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, reported B92. "I can assure you that the president did not give any such statement to any Kosovo agency," said the president's PR chief, Neda Stanisavljevic. Other Yugoslav and Serbian officials denied having any knowledge of the arrest of the two men most wanted by the Hague Tribunal since they netted former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic last year. Russia's Itar Tass agency reported from Rome that Kostunica had told a news agency in Kosovo that the extradition of the two men was under way. The Yugoslav state television channel, Yu Info, also broadcast the news, later adding a denial from The Hague. A representative for the Hague Prosecution said this evening that the reports were only rumours.
