Yugoslavia, Chief of Staff Pavkovic: Army is not protecting Mladic

(13/2/2002)NIS (February 13) - Yugoslav Army Chief of Staff Nebojsa Pavkovic last night denied that the Army was protecting former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, reported B92. Pavkovic told TV Bela Mi in Nis that he did not even know whether Mladic was in Serbia. "I think Mladic is being protected by his own security, who are his closest fellow-fighters, relatives and resident of the place he's residing in," said Pavkovic. Commenting on claims by Hague Tribunal Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte that she knew Mladic's address in Belgrade and that President Vojislav Kostunica and the Yugoslav Army were protecting him, Pavkovic added that is someone had information about Mladic's whereabouts they should come forward with it. Pavkovic declined to comment on The Hague Tribunal trial of Slobodan Milosevic, saying he hadn't studied the indictment. However, he said, no one from Belgrade had issued orders to the Yugoslav Army during the NATO bombing in Kosovo for crimes to be committed against the Albanian population.
