Yugoslavia: Chirac backs Yugoslav entry into EU by 2004

BELGRADE (December 8)(8/12/2001) - Zoran Djindjic said yesterday evening that French President Jaques Chirac had offered his support for Yugoslavia's bid to enter the European Union by 2004, reported B92. The Serbian prime minister, following talks with Chirac in the French Embassy in Belgrade, said the Serbian government had "received support for the process of reform," adding that he had requested that "France encourage foreign investors to come to Serbia." Djindjic confirmed they had spoken about cooperation with The Hague: "Chirac supported the concrete cooperation of our country with the Tribunal and the transfer of the indicted." "I told him that the Serbian government has no problem with this," adding the Serbian premier. Djindjic claimed he and Chirac had not discussed Ratko Mladic, the indicted former Bosnian Serb military leader whom the Hague prosecution claim is living in Belgrade.
