Yugoslavia: Kostunica: Mladic not "to my knowledge" in our country

BRUSSELS (December 3)(3/12/2001) - Vojislav Kostunica said today that he did not believe former Bosnian Serb Army commander Ratko Mladic was on Yugoslav territory, reported Reuters, cited by B92. The Yugoslav president was commenting on a Serbian source claiming at the weekend that Mladic, who is being sought by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes, was living in a Yugoslav military facility secured by eighty soldiers. "To my knowledge, Mladic is not in our country," Kostunica told journalists after a meeting today in Brussels with senior European Union officials. Kostunica also said that Belgrade would cooperate more closely with the Hague Tribunal once new legislation was in place. He warned that, until laws regulating cooperation were in place, the uneasy relationship with the Tribunal could destabilize the region. European Commission president Romano Prodi said today that Kostunica had pledged to have legislation adopted by early 2002.
