Yugoslavia, Djindjic: Indications tell Mladic is in Serbia

(28/1/2002) BELGRADE (January 28) - There are "indications" former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, wanted at The Hague on genocide charges, is in Serbia, Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic conceded today, reported B92. Djindjic told today that Mladic had "occasionally appeared in public a few months ago," but said that since then "there have been only indications, but no proof." The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague has repeatedly claimed Mladic is in Belgrade under the protection of the Yugoslav army, allegations the federal authorities have strongly denied. Today's comments from Djindjic, Belgrade's strongest advocate of cooperation with The Hague, are the first to suggest there is some substance to the claims. The prime minister insisted his government has no authority over the army, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Yugoslav President. Djindjic said there had been "hints and guessing" that Mladic is "probably" in Serbian territory. "But the whole thing is organized in such a way it is very difficult to get any information," he told.
